The globetrotting beauty behind the bar of POV at the W Hotel keeps mum about the celebs she serves, but easily gushes about the view from her office and the delicious drinks at POV. On Tap chats with Mandy Anderson about life at the top (of the W).
On Tap: How did you get into bartending?
Mandy Anderson: I’m from Wisconsin and my family owned restaurants there. I think the first time I stood behind a bar I was 9. I got my first bartending job at 20. I’m not sure they knew I was 20.
OT: What brought you to DC?
MA: My husband got into grad school here, we’ve been here about a year and a half. We bounced around before that: St. Thomas, Napa, Melbourne.
OT: Wow. When you aren’t working, where are you?
MA: When I’m not home cooking, we are usually out for dinner or drinks in the 14th Street area just north of Thomas Circle: Birch & Barley, Saint-Ex, or Estadio.
OT: What is the best part about working at the W?
MA: Well, my office has a phenomenal view! We also have a really interesting client base. I’m not going to name names, but there have been a few celebrities and high profile senators. It’s fun to see them out having a good time.
OT: Can you recommend a good drink for winter?
MA: Our hot drinks are awesome. The S’More Whiskey uses our housemade hot chocolate and is topped with graham cracker and whipped creme. Yum!
OT: What sets POV apart from being just another hotel bar?
MA: Besides the view?! Well, we have a really unique cocktail program. Sasha Petraske is credited with bringing back the Pre-Prohibition style cocktails. He came down from New York and did a two-week training with us.
