Ed Blaze is bringing Metro Comedy to Bar 7.
Looking for something funny and fun to do on a Wednesday night? Starting this February, Metro Comedy presents live standup at Bar 7, an upscale bar and lounge located on 7th Street near the convention center. Metro Comedy, launched in 2009 by local comedian and host Ed Blaze, is set to bring comedy to Bar 7 as a biweekly event, bringing professional touring comedians and local, amateur talent together for non-stop laughs.
The inaugural night kicks off at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, and features internationally known local comedian Sean Savoy as the headlining act. Savoy, a young comedian who has been known to cover topics ranging from relationships to his relationship with porn to the joy he takes in watching musicals, has a Comedy Central show special scheduled for later this year. Lately he’s been busy touring America and Europe with the well-known Pablo Francisco. “We’re lucky to get him,” said Metro Comedy spokesperson Jennifer Ortiz.
Local, up-and-coming comics Mekka and Kyle Martin will be joining Savoy. Mekka is scheduled to hit the road with two-time world heavyweight boxing champion turned comedian Riddick Bowe as part of Bowe’s 2011 Comedy Tour. She is also starring on Real Critics TV beginning in 2011 and will kick off her own radio show in February. Kyle Martin has opened for the likes of Donnell Rawlings (popular for his work on Chappelle’s Show, including his signature “I’m rich biaaaatch!”). Martin has also appeared at the DC Improv and clubs throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Many DC area venues either highlight predominantly national touring talent or amateur standup, often in the form of open mic nights. Metro Comedy’s new night promises to give the region’s up and coming comics a venue to showcase their skills while featuring national guests.
“I want equal opportunity for the comedians. Most of the places around here won’t give you much of a chance if you’re a new comedian – only five to seven minutes on stage,” said host and creator Ed Blaze. Blaze, a comedian in his own right, performs at various venues around town and draws audiences in with his personal experiences of growing up in Africa, his coming-to-America stories and his hilarious views on current political events.
“And a lot of open mic nights feature other comedians in the audience. We give new comedians the opportunity to perform in front of a real crowd for 20 to 30 minutes.”
Metro Comedy has brought comedy to a number of DC venues since 2009, including Station 9 on U Street and Mr. Smith’s in Georgetown.
Bar 7 will offer a full menu and bar during the show. The venue seats 200. Tickets are $15 and can be bought online at www.metrocomedy.com or at the door the day of the show.
