The holiday season is upon us and with that so are the festive parties. Whether you plan on wearing that little black dress or a glittery mini, holiday parties are a fun time to try out different makeup applications. Some popular looks this holiday season include colored smoky eyes, bold vampy lips, the nude look, and bold black eyeliner, says makeup artist Gina Robinson.
“The smoky eye is a classic look that I personally can’t get enough of,” Robinson says. Not only is this a friendly look for ladies afraid of precision lines and bold colors, the look can change depending on the color pallet and eye shape, she says. Try a subtle smoky eye in neutral tones for when wearing bold colors, or try more intense and darker for a sexier look. Also try adding a shimmery or metallic shade on the lid to dress up the look for a holiday party.
Bold vampy lips are another favorite of Robinson’s, who says that the look can work for anyone not afraid of a little color. “Just pick your favorite shade in any opaque deep tone and rock it,” she says. Her favorite shades are orangey reds, deep browns, burgundy and vampy purple. The look works perfectly for that little black dress too, she says. A quick tip for this look is to make sure lips are well hydrated with a lip balm before applying the lipstick. “And if you can’t find that perfect shade of lipstick, try lip liners which work just as well and can last even longer,” she adds.
For the nude look it is all about the skin and the most important thing Robinson says, is not over-doing it on the makeup. “Fresh glowing healthy skin, simple nude eye shadow, a light wash of color on the cheeks, some great mascara and a natural lip gloss,” she says. For foundation Robinson’s favorite is NARS Sheer Glow and for subtle mascara she uses BUXOM by Bare Essentials as a first coat, with either MAC Plush Lash or Diorshow Iconic as the second coat for a more dramatic look.
Bold black eyeliner is a personal favorite of Robinson’s and an easy step up from the nude look. “Anything from a classy short winged out look (think Audrey Hepburn) to the sultry thick winged out cat eye (very Bridget Bardot), and all variations in between,” she says. Look for long wear, water proof liners and practice your eye lining skills first with a product that is easy to remove, she suggests. “This look is perfect for bold colored dresses as it will bring attention back to your eyes and won’t compete with bright colors,” she adds.
Just keep in mind not to over do over-do your makeup for any occasion, Robinson reminds. “People should look at you and see your beauty, not only notice the makeup.”
