“Girl power with a side of might” is a common mantra these days. The resurrection of women’s roller derby is a rock ‘em sock ‘em, whirling dervish in many American cities. However, in replacing skates with brawn, DC Ladies’ Arm Wrestling puts a wild new spin on the growing story of female empowerment.
Colorfully named arm grappler Ms. Fire defeated the East End Eliminator in an eight woman, single elimination charity tournament on March 10th. The event, held at the Capitol Hill American Legion, saw D/CLAW supporters raise close to $3,500 for the DC Firefighters’ Burn Foundation. D/CLAW’s SuperBRAWL of champions will take place on June 2nd and will feature the 8 winners of the recent matches. TheSuperBRAWL will determine the DC champion who will attend the National Ladies Arm Wrestling Championship in Charlottesville in mid-June. The event is scheduled by the Collective of Lady Arm Wrestlers, a ten-city organization of which DC’s chapter is a charter member. As with similar events, the proceeds will go to local organizations in need.
D/CLAW proves once and for all that when pro wrestling meets camp (and the ladies!), only the most amazing things can happen.
