Dwight Yoakam

06-21-2013 at 08:00pm
Where: 9:30 Club
815 V St. NW, Washington DC

Yoakam’s latest Warner Bros. album, 3 Pears, exemplifies his ability to incorporate multiple, competing influences into a piece of cohesive art. It balances his country core with a fiercely independent embrace of rock, Americana, pop and soul. It blends Yoakam’s respect for his musical predecessors with the collaborative assistance of modern singer/songwriter Beck, who co-produced two tracks, and current rocker Kid Rock, who co-wrote the hooky opener, “Take Hold Of My Hand.” But most importantly, 3 Pears builds on his trademark edginess with a notable, growing positivity.

They have established themselves as America's premiere interpreters and innovators of Jamaican music and a pretty good rock band to boot.

To the islands of the Caribbean and the Pacific. To the streets of London and New York. Los Angeles and Paris. Tokyo and Berlin. And, of course, back home to Africa.

Alan Jackson ft. Gloriana

09-06-2013 at 06:00pm
Where: Merriweather Post Pavilion
10475 Little Patuxent Pkwy., Columbia MD

Jackson has traveled far more than thirty miles from those small town beginnings in Newnan, Georgia – his music has taken him to the floorboards of the Grand Ole Opry, CBGB and Carnegie Hall, to stages as distant as Australia and Scandinavia, to performances in front of four Presidents. He’s written and recorded songs that have celebrated and chronicled life since “Here in the Real World” put him on the map, finding himself in the elite company of Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Merle Haggard as the only songwriters who’ve written and recorded more than 20 songs that they’ve also taken to the top of the charts. And his trek continues with the 13 songs that comprise Thirty Miles West.
