Allison Wolfe, lead singer of local punk riot grrrl group Partyline and a 10-year Washington resident, shares her thoughts on the best of the local area.
BEST LOCAL BAND(S)?
“Hott Beat. Our guitarist Angela (Melkisethian) is in it. Half the act is her banter. I think she should do standup. Also Mess Up the Mess! They’re fun, catchy and feminist. I like both bands because they’re girl-powered and politicized, but in a fun way.”
BEST PLACE TO EAT?
“A&J restaurant in Rockville—it’s a northern Chinese dim sum restaurant. They have all these little dishes and great vegetarian food.”
BEST MUSIC VENUE?
“I like the Warehouse Next Door. It’s really fun and low-key.”
BEST LOCAL MODE OF TRANSPORTATION?
“My bicycle. It’s fastest and I think it’s fun, but it’s very dangerous. I get almost mowed down everyday. It’s death-defying.”
BEST TOURIST TRAP?
“The Jefferson Memorial. It just seems like the ultimate make-out spot. It’s pretty and it’s a great place to go in the summertime at night because the pavement is still warm after the sun goes down.
BEST THING ABOUT THE D.C. MUSIC SCENE?
“It’s a good way to relieve the tension of the kind of uptight, stressed out D.C. grind and nine to five thing.”
ABOUT PARTYLINE: Singer Allison Wolfe, guitarist Angela Melkisethian and drummer Crystal Bradley fused together just a year ago to form Partyline—an all-girl, all-glasses-wearing punk band that remains true to the genre with politically-charged, forthright music. Their first EP, Girls with Glasses, was released on Retard Disco in May. Want to know more? Visit them online at www.partylinedc.com.
