What’s New
If you want to pacify your granola friends while still ripping into some really amazing meat, you can now do both at Falls Church’s Elevation Burger. The beef is grass-fed and local. The fries are done in not-terrible-for-you olive oil. The bottled drinks include soy milk. Plus, the menu is cheap enough to be fast food, but the high concept makes Elevation cool enough for a date—especially if it’s with a hippie.
442 S. Washington St. in Falls Church VA. www.elevationburger.com.
Finn & Porter joins Mortons and Ruth’s Chris as the latest upscale steakhouse in the downtown area. Along with traditional surf-and-turf fare, F&P also offers an array of sushi and an extensive wine menu; expect some offbeat items like gingered sweet potato and crab soup as chef Andreas Georgakopolous gives the menu some flavor from his native Greece. 900 10th Street, 202-719-1600. www.finnandporter.com.
It’s not that you can't find good Vietnamese food in this area, it’s just that, until now you’ve had to trudge to Falls Church to get it. Pho Hiep Hoa, now open in Silver Spring, serves massive bowls of Pho (noodle soup) for ridiculously cheap prices—and each order easily serves two. 921-G Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, MD. 301-588-5808.
What’s Notable
Dino’s, a Cleveland Park Italian standby (which we love because we feel like the Rat Pack is going to suddenly appear and shmooze with us every time we eat there), is adding a brunch shift to its menu, with breakfast classics like Eggs Florentine alongside Italian fare like panino al verdure: squash, zucchini, pepper’s and goat’s milk cheese on grilled ciabata. Of course, the best part of any brunch menu is the drinks it creates in order to make alcohol before noon more acceptable. Our favorites at Dino’s? The Bellini Rosso with blood orange puree and Prosecco, and the Blood and Sand with scotch, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and maraschino cherry liquor. 3435 Connecticut Ave, NW. 202-686-2966. www.dino-dc.com.
Feeling Naughty? Feeling Wicked? Feeling—okay, get your mind out of the gutter, and come and enjoy desserts inspired by the smash hit musical Wicked, on stage at the Kennedy Center until January 15. The Roof Terrace Restaurant and Bar (at the Kennedy Center) introduces the Wicked Witch’s Hat, a chocolate “hat” filled with mint mousse, drizzled with green chocolate, and garnished with a chocolate broomstick. Surrender, Dorothy! 2700 F St., NW, Washington. www.kennedy-center.org.
Four P's in DC is no longer...but Four G's is open for business. Due to a recent ownership change, the venerable Uptown Irish pub known for its Wednesday night trivia competition had to switch its moniker (the Falls Church location retains the Ireland's Four Provinces name). But regulars need not worry—though the signs out front now read Four Green Fields (a reference to the four provinces of Ireland as sung about by Tommy Makem), inside everything is just as it was.
French bistro Mon Ami Gabi celebrates National Soup Month (yeah, apparently there is one) with its Soup Flights special—three miniature versions of the restaurant’s signature soups, served side by side. Flavors include Yukon Gold Potato and Brie, French Onion Au Gratin, and a winter root vegetable soup with Crème Fraiche. We don’t care what the diet books say; if French women ate like this, they would be fat. But also really, really happy. 7239 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda. 301-654-1234. www.monamigabi.com.
The Tyson’s Corner branch of upscale steak house Morton’s is eschewing its quarterly steak and wine dinner in favor of the one substitution that could make the night even classier—steak and champagne. On January 20th, for $195 per guest (tax and tip included), you get a five-course meal, each course accompanied by a glass of champagne designed to bring out the flavor of the food. Some sample pairings: Shrimp Alexander with 1996 La Grande Dame; Crème Brulee with Demi-Sec NV. 8075 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Virginia. 703-883-0800. www.mortons.com.
The National Gallery of Art’s got a new exhibit entitled “Cezanne in Provence,” and to celebrate it, the Chamber of Commerce of Marseille Provence has organized a “Provence Week” at area restaurants and venues around the city. The Gallery’s Garden Café will be transformed into “Café Provence,” replete with French a la carte items and cooking demonstrations. Eateries including Bistrot du Coin, Bistrot Lepic, and Citronelle will import French chefs for the week to infuse the menu with regional specialties.

Stoney’s the neighborhood pub that felt like South Jersey in the middle of DC, is officially closing after 37 years of serving up Stoney Burgers and the best grilled cheese in town. Get in for one last ridiculously cheap happy hour special before the bar officially closes up shop on the 14th. 1307 L Street, 202-347-9163.
