Almost every review or article written about the Tune Inn on Capitol Hill leads off with and fixates on the plethora of animal heads on the wall. Well, perhaps this write-up does as well, but if there is one thing you need to know about the Tune Inn, just take a look at its selection of beers on tap. Of the available options, two of them are . . . drum roll please . . . Miller High Life and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Any bar with both the Champagne of Beers and the quintessential classic PBR readily at hand means business.
The Tune Inn seems almost out of place at its Capitol Hill area location, though it's been there for five decades. It's located right next door to the much trendier Hawk N Dove, but being trendy is not what the Tune Inn is about. What is it about? Good drinks, good food and good company.
For thirsty folks, the Tune Inn has plenty to offer, but don't come looking for high-end selections. Cheap drinks are more in line with what this place, be it wine, liquor or brew. A Coors Light actually cost what a bottle of Coors Light should cost. Amazing.
For the hungry, the Tune Inn does not disappoint. The place boasts a lengthy menu, and the kitchen is open late. The bartender will tell you that they have the best burger in town. You know what? They're not kidding. Grab a bacon double cheeseburger, a side of fries, a pint of High Life and say 'To Hell' with healthy living. You only live once.
The jukebox features older selections, but is solid with the likes of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dylan, The Who, Motown classics and Springsteen, just to name a few.
On a side note, the Tune Inn is usually filled with smoke, but that will have to change with the new District law banning smoking in public places.
What makes the Tune Inn so darn special, however, is how friendly everyone is. There is a solid bunch of regulars, and they all have a smile and a story. Visit the spot yourself, sit at the bar and order a drink, and you'll make five new friends by the time you're on your second round. Just beware: One of the regulars, will try to get you to buy everyone a round, and will try to convince you there is a $500 membership fee to become a regular. Don't believe him.
Oh, and about those animals heads on the wall. There are deer, bears, raccoons and other critters who have met their maker. And all probably have a story to tell about the Tune Inn.
