“‘In Glengarry Glen Ross’, Alec Baldwin’s character tells his salesmen that the first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado and the second prize is a set of steak knives. What is the third prize?” asked Melissa D’Lando, a volunteer host at a recent Wonderland Ballroom trivia night. We’re six questions into the third category of the night — all things Baldwin — and immediately the din-filled upstairs lounge goes quiet with the hum of mini-pencils racing to scratch the answers in on the official answer sheet, right below “Bio-Dome” and “fat little pig.”
With all the beaded brows and finger drumming going on, the atmosphere could be considered studious — if it wasn’t for the pints upon pints of beer involved. According to Wonderland’s weekly trivia organizer, Sally Prendergast, that’s exactly what keeps the bar’s upstairs room packed every Monday night.
“It’s a way to use your brain while in a social environment that also includes flowing booze … You’re letting off brain steam, if you will,” she said. “And for some of us, it’s just something to do while you’re drinking, because you’d be drinking anyway, but now you can say you went to trivia. Any organized activity adds legitimacy to copious weeknight drinking. Look at kickball. If you don’t know stuff, you play kickball. If you do, you come to trivia.”
Judging from the average turnout, that doesn’t seem to be a unique opinion. Groups of four and five huddle around rickety tables the size of TV trays to hash out answers for categories like “Album Openers” (Q: Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid?” A: “War Pigs”) and “Presidential Gaffes” (Q: Which former President asked the tailor fitting his pants to leave some extra space “around under my bunghole”? A: Lyndon Johnson). Sporting group names like “When I Was a POW for Five and a Half Years, We Didn’t Have Trivia Nights” and “The DOW Dropped Faster than Bristol Palin’s Panties,” the team members argue among themselves — and sometimes with a competitor across the aisle — in pursuit of forgotten plotlines from “Boy Meets World” or the varying interpretations of the lyrics to Don McClean’s “American Pie” (and not, not “that shitty Madonna cover,” as more than one participant was quick to note).
The reward for this exercise in pop culture recall isn’t a Baldwin-buffed Cadillac Eldorado, mind you, but something almost as good: a $100 tab for your team. But with that much booze on the line — and a fair share coursing through the crowd’s veins — the sore losers are quick to make themselves known.
“The hostility you find at times is amazing, and it has caused me to take on more of a hard-ass role as host,” said Prendergast. “We’ve always said, talk shit as much as you want, but you’re going to get it right back. You’re not being graded on this, so chill out.”
Plus, according to the hosts at the Wonderland, the more stupid an answer is, the more likely it is to score you a free round on the house — so feel free to express your belief that Obama is a Muslim after all. You might get a Yuengling out of it.
Trivial differences aside, the Wonderland crowd is far from stupid — addicted to Wikipedia with a predilection for getting trashed, maybe — but not stupid. Trivia there is a young man’s game where keeping the proceedings thoroughly ridiculous is the key to keeping the crowd happy. But that isn’t so throughout the Metro area. Raphaela Voseali, a member of the trivia team over at O’Sullivan’s in Arlington, said “[Our crowd is] a mixture. They go from college students to working people — even priests because there’s a church around the corner. Even they like to come in every so often.”
Other bars, like the LA Bar & Grill, just like giving their regulars something to do on a Monday night.
“[Our MC and L.A. regular] Mike walks around with a mic and kind of busts everyone’s balls. It’s a neighborhood kind of feel,” said LA Bar staffer Sean Deloatche. “That’s what our bar theme is. It’s a neighborhood bar with good drinks, good food and good service.”
However, back at the Wonderland, there’s a three-way tie for second place and, like any true competition in the post-”Starsky and Hutch” era, it’s come down to a dance-off. After seven rounds of trivia (and drinks) and the spectacle of watching various team members pull out the best bar mitzvah dance moves, it becomes more than clear that the key to pulling a win at trivia night isn’t a high SAT score.
According to Melissa D’Lando, the night’s volunteer MC, “I think the appeal of trivia is just that it falls under that umbrella of irresistible kitsch that no one can really resist. Also, it gives those of us who have little legit useful knowledge a chance to shine.”
Damn right. As it turns out, the salesmen’s third place prize was “You’re fired,” but this writer walked away with a cool second place finish for the evening — and $15 bucks off my bar tab. Not bad for a newcomer to the arena of useless knowledge and proof that all those hours spent reading Wikipedia during work hours can pay off where it counts: the liver.
