Admit it. "Confession" is a word that doesn’t come easy to the lips.
But with the release of their Liquid Confession brews this fall—Holy Brew Brewing Company’s flagship products—it certainly will. Positioning itself squarely in the midst of the chronicled clash of good and evil, Holy Brew has cast a permanent shadow on guarded inhibitions and awkward admissions. But first, judgment hour - or at least, a decisive moment. With a two-brew inventory of these elixir pilsners, one has to make a choice: Will it be the airy satiating sweetness of Heavenly Light, or the aptly bitter-accented Purgatory? Just where does your moral compass fall?
Founded in 2008 by Scott Kasper — with partners Warren Brown, John Krahulec, Mark Kruchten and John Wiegand — Holy Brew was founded with the goal of creating a product with which consumers can identify. To that end, the partners perceive their product as more than simply a brand—it’s a lifestyle. The MO: just be yourself. "We expect [the customer’s] experience with Holy Brew products to increase their individuality, enjoyment and awareness about what is important to them," says partner Warren Brown.
With Liquid Confession, that’s exactly what they seek to create — a forum for people to share what’s unique to them and a brand-concept that includes those revealed sipper subtleties. To that end, even the emblematic dove and bat characters were conceptualized in a recent logo-naming contest.
So what’s next for this potable cast? The partners are currently brewing up a new blend slated for early 2010 with their Lions Head (Pa.) brew master. True to form, they plan to hold an ale-naming contest as part of their simultaneous upcoming DC and NoVa roll-out events.
Hallmark brews Heavenly Light and Purgatory are presently available for retail in DC at Metro Wine and Spirit and Tenleytown Liquors; in Vienna at Norm’s Beer & Wine; and in Alexandria at Cheesetique. Or, you can pull up to the bar at an ever-growing list of local suds-spots. For a full list of current locations visit

So why Liquid Confession? Well, from a brewery that even keeps an online confessional on their Web site, one thing’s for sure — it’ll keep you honest.
